The islands quarter

Construction of the theatre began in 1738 but work was delayed by a number of problems (war, embezzlement etc.). The first theatrical performance only took place 14 years later. The development of the site was completed in 1759. Built from 1901 to 1904 in grey sandstone and in Romanesque Revival style in the grounds of the Garden of Love at the end of the Place de la Comedie, the Temple Neuf is reflected in the Moselle River and its medieval charm contrasts in a picturesque manner with the classical architecture of the Opera Theatre.

The first Hôtel de l'Intendance was erected in the 18th century as part of a major urban project under the leadership of Marshal de Belle-Isle who was responsible for giving Metz its classical stamp in terms of architecture. The seat of the prefecture since 1806, the present building was partially rebuilt based on the original model after it was damaged in a fire.

Les travaux de construction de l’abbaye Saint-Clément (1683-1737) commencent par l’église. Œuvre de l’architecte Jean Spinga. L'église est une parfaite illustration du gothique bénédictin en usage jusqu’au milieu du 18ème siècle. Depuis 1982, l’ancienne abbaye abrite le siège de la Région Lorraine dans un quartier du Pontiffroy entièrement rénové.
