Description

A circuit marked by small bronze triangles fixed to the floor embossed with an image of the Germans gateway.

This picturesque Outre-Seille quarter still resembles a medieval town. Its narrow streets take you in the footsteps of merchants and artisans, tanners and cartwrights: place Saint-Louis 13th C – 15th C, Germans gateway 13th C – 15th C, St Eucaire’s church 12th C – 15th C, St Maximin’s church 12th C (stained glass windows by Jean Cocteau) – 15th C, the Burtaigne town house 16th C.

HÔTEL DE BURTAIGNE

The hotel de Burtaigne was built by the de Gournay family in the early 16th century. The medieval influence can still be seen in the low diamond-shaped roof set back from the facade and the small windows in the attic, at the top of the building. However, its architectural style is moving away from the Italian model and is closer to that of the French Renaissance.

PLACE SAINT LOUIS

The place Saint-Louis was created in the 14th century. Originally, it was an area that was crossed by the Seille river and occupied by money-changers. The Mediterranean atmosphere of the place Saint-Louis is evident in the alignment of the houses, attached to one another. This unique appearance is reminiscent of the squares and public monuments of the Italian Republics and its aspect is very similar to Siena.
