Initiated by the RHS project, the Dutemple neighborhood offers a unique cultural pathway that embodies the spirit of community and heritage. This undertaking by RHS - a European project - crafts a bridge not only between neighborhoods but also between cultures, spotlighting the collective memory and life of its residents. Imagine traversing a route that has been drawn, photographed, and tested by the locals themselves, a journey that brings alive the essence of Valenciennes through the eyes of its inhabitants. This path does more than connect points of interest; it weaves a narrative of community, resilience, and shared heritage, all within the vibrant framework of the Dutemple quarter.
Technical Insights on the Journey
Our route spans approximately 2.06 kilometers within the comforting altitudes ranging between 49 to 53 meters, creating a gentle yet engaging stroll through Dutemple. Noteworthy is the minimal elevation gain, ensuring an accessible and enjoyable experience for walkers of all levels. This meticulously designed path not only connects cherished community centers but also encourages exploration and appreciation of the local terrain, making for an impressive blend of ease and significance in urban exploration.

Centre Social Dutemple
Créé en 1968, le centre social est un équipement de quartier ouvert à toute la population habitant à proximité. Il propose de l’accueil, des animations, des activités et des services dans différents domaines (loisirs, culture, santé, insertion, etc…).
La fosse Dutemple
La fosse Dutemple de la compagnie des mines d’Anzin est un ancien charbonnage du bassin minier du Nord Pas de Calais, situé à Valenciennes. Deux puits sont entrepris en 1764 à l’ouest de la commune, mais ils sont abandonnés à cause des venues d’eau du Torrent d’Anzin. Le fonçage n’est repris qu’en 1826. Des cités sont bâties près de la fosse. Le puits n° 1 est comblé en 1911. La fosse est détruite durant la première guerre mondiale, elle est reconstruite avec un chevalement en béton armé en 1920. La fosse cesse d’extraire le 18 mai 1940. Le puits n°2 est comblé en 1949. Il est resté ouvert durant 185 ans. Le carreau de la fosse Dutemple est reconverti en espace vert. Le chevalement est inscrit aux monuments historiques par arrêté du 6 mai 1992. Le chevalement du puits n°2 a été classé le 30 juin 2010 au patrimoine mondial de l’Unesco. La hauteur de la structure est de 42.50 m depuis le sol jusqu’à la toiture. Son poids total est de 1000 tonnes.
Les corons
La rue des Éparges doit son nom à la bataille des Éparges (département de la Meuse) qui a suscité une série de combats pour la maîtrise de la crête des Éparges, opposant l’armée française à l’armée allemande du 17 février au 5 avril 1915, au cours de la Première Guerre mondiale. Ces combats se sont déroulés dans des conditions extrêmement difficiles, sous la pluie, la neige, dans la boue. L’infanterie des deux camps a dû lutter de longues semaines sous les coups de l’artillerie. L’armée française tente au cours de plusieurs assauts de conquérir la crête. Après de très lourdes pertes des deux côtés, les français parviennent sur la crête sans pouvoir en déloger les allemands.
La Ferme Urbaine
Lieu de production de légumes mis en place en 2017 à destination des habitants. En juillet 2019, une œuvre collective éphémère « Transient » est créé par deux artistes Benjamin Duquenne et Adrien Roubens.
