The commune of Saumont is located on the slopes of Albret, in the Auvignon valley.
In the 14th century, the lordship of Saumont belonged to a branch of the Albret family, before becoming the property of the Béarn family.
At the beginning of the 19th century, the town still had two groups of houses, the first of which, located in front of the castle, was completely destroyed in the 19th century. Some houses still have vestiges of the 16th century, but the other houses were rebuilt in the 20th century. Fontarède can be seen in the distance between two small valleys. Although not very high, the site is clear of the neighbouring hillsides. You can see the villages of Montagnac-sur-Auvignon, Moncaut and Calignac. The church dates from the 12th century, massive, it is flanked by a round tower that serves as a bell tower. A medallion represents Christ in majesty.
