The first stage of the old "voie d'Ossau" leaves the Chemin de Piémont (GR78) at Sainte Colome, a charming village overlooking the plain of Arudy. The route then heads south and climbs up the green and wide Ossau valley, passing through villages with remarkable architecture. It then reaches Laruns, the contemporary capital of the valley, known for its cheese fair on the first weekend in October.
