Description

This walk reveals a remarkable built heritage and gives you the chance to discover a beautiful natural area in the beautiful Lesse Valley. Like most buildings in Resteigne (see description of the walk Gué du Ry de Glaumont), the castle is built of limestone rubble. This large walled quadrangle dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. This is the starting point of your trek through the unspoilt countryside.

The two areas of Chéfiri and Les Pairées are unique in Belgium. They offer unexpected landscapes at our latitude, very similar to southern landscapes. Indeed, on this dry limestone moor, populated by black pines and Scots pines, numerous junipers grow. This shrub is a fully protected species. The flora is also represented by rare species. Several species of orchids, the pulsatile anemone and other herbaceous plants such as the lily pad falangere, yellow helianthemum and clover make up the splendour of this reserve.

Other remarkable plants have been reported by eminent botanists. They have wonderful names that make you want to know them better: monkshood with Jupiter helmet, Pyrenean ornithogale, parisette and nardus. Sheep are currently grazing on these moors. They clean up the land naturally by selective grazing. Several rare species of birds and butterflies can be seen here.
