The forest of the Double is overflown every year by flights of wood pigeons. The blue bird, which in the southwest is called the pigeon, migrates from Scandinavia to southern Europe and even Africa to spend the winter. The peak of the birds' passage in the Dordogne is between October and November.
Each year, the Federation of hunters carries out monitoring of the goshawks: they are counted as they pass through the Pyrenean passes; some are equipped with Argos beacons to study their migration behavior. Finally, in Dordogne, sedentary goshawks are ringed to study their movements.
In the forest of the Double, the paloumayres (pigeon hunters) are numerous. You will pass by some of them. In these installations, the hunters attract the pigeons and encourage them to land in the trees.
