Hôtel de Wambrechies / Evêché

Cet hôtel particulier, appelé hôtel de Wambrechies, est aujourd’hui le siège de l’archevêché de Lille.Il fait partie des nombreux hôtels particuliers construits le long de la rue Royale et dans les rues adjacentes à partir de la fin du 17ème siècle. En effet, cette rue est l’un des axes qui quadrillent le quartier « français » de Lille. Avant l’arrivée des français, cette partie de l’actuel Vieux-Lille était située à l’extérieur de la ville, c’était la campagne !Pourquoi élargir la ville à cet endroit ? Pour faire le lien entre la ville existante - qui s’arrêtait alors à l’extrémité sud de la rue Royale - et la Citadelle, nouvellement construite au Nord-Ouest.Ce bâtiment a connu plusieurs vies avant de devenir siège du diocèse : construit pour le seigneur de Wambrechies, il devient siège de l’Intendance de Flandre et d’Artois à la fin du 18ème siècle. Préfecture au milieu 19ème siècle, il abrite à la fin des années 1870 les premiers cours de l’université catholique, avant d’accueillir au début du 20ème siècle les archevêques de Cambrai, puis en 1913 l’évêché de Lille, devenu archevêché en 2008.La visite se termine ici. Vous pouvez prolonger la découverte de ce quartier français dans les rues adjacentes, ou vous rediriger vers l’hyper-centre en retournant sur vos pas jusqu’à la fin de la rue Royale.
