The history of the town is closely linked to that of its castle built in the 12th century by the Viscount of Bézaume, first lord of Duras. Built on the heights of the hillside, the building watches over the lands of the Dukes of Duras and the Dropt valley. Duras develops and takes the form of a bastide (new fortified town), created for military and economic purposes in the context of Franco-English rivalries. The castle is located at the end of the promontory, while the town is closed on the plateau side by a fortified gate, known as the Tour de l'Horloge. This vestige of the former fortifications, classified as a Historic Monument, is still clearly visible today. You will be able to discover the richness of this historical heritage during the tour which will also take you to the Maison des Vins where you can taste the famous Duras wine.
