A major site in Aquitaine, this castle, built on a rocky spur in the middle of the forest and far from the main roads, exudes a rare serenity. It is the work of Baron Béranger de Roquefeuil who, from 1480 to 1520, transformed the 13th century castle into a masterpiece of military architecture where medieval defensive attributes (remarkable dungeon in the shape of a ship's prow, curtains, barbican...) rub shoulders with fire artillery. The castle was embellished in the 18th century by Marguerite de Fumel, but the revolution caused the partial destruction of the aristocratic symbols. It was acquired by the commune in 1860. Its interest resides in two paradoxes: an absolute model of a fortified castle, it was completed at a time when the first Renaissance buildings were flourishing on the banks of the Loire; an impregnable fortress, it was never attacked...
