The heights of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port have been known for centuries as passages to Spain, weaknesses on the Pyrenean ridge offering tipping points from one side to the other of the mountain range. From Charlemagne's troops to medieval pilgrims, the notoriety of the ports of Cize has crossed the ages and still makes contemporary long-distance walkers dream, on their way to Santiago de Compostela. If you leave Estérençuby by bicycle, you can follow this illustrious route, following the steps of the pilgrims from the Magdeleine chapel to enter Garazi through the Saint-Jacques gate. The call of the mountain is felt there, a long ascent awaits you then in direction of the passes of altitude. The Napoleon road requires method and application, about 18 km of ascent for 1100 m of difference in height.
