In 1908, a young English student, T E Lawrence, became fascinated with the medieval period. He decided to cycle around France on the trail of Richard the Lionheart. This third stage will take us from Périgueux to Hautefort, passing through the picturesque village of Le Change, gathered around its church. It belonged to the châtellenie of Auberoche. One of the great battles of the Hundred Years' War took place here in 1345. Going up to the chapel by the small road, the remains of the fortress dismantled in the 15th century give a glimpse of its former power.
Going up the valley of the Auvézère, Lawrence will go to Forge d'Ans where thousands of cannons were sunk for the Royal Navy. Then on to Tourtoirac and its 11th century abbey. Finally, Lawrence arrives at Hautefort, whose castle was besieged by Richard the Lionheart in 1183.
