A walk along the PR Route de la terre is an opportunity to step back in time and appreciate the heritage of earth culture, both architectural and artistic, which is still alive and well in the Toulousain region and, here, in the Coteaux du Girou. There are 5 points on the PR Route de la terre itinerary where you can appreciate the expertise that has left its mark on the Girou landscapes.

From the Lauragais plain and the banks of the Canal du Midi, escape to the hillsides of south-east Toulouse to discover the Voie d'Arles-GR653. Along the way, you'll come across panoramic views of the Pyrenees, between ridges and valleys, and local producers in the surrounding area. Follow the red and white GR653 markings all the way along. Places of interest along the way: - Village of Baziège: former Laurag cooperative of wheat growers, Saint-Etienne church (14th century) and milestone (4th century), grain market, former Aéropostale lighthouse, etc. - Canal du Midi, Montgiscard lock and wash-house - Village of Montgiscard and its Grand'Rue with its 20th-century postcard appearance - Village of Montbrun-Lauragais, hamlet of Montbrun-le-Vieux, working mill and the bakery L'Ami du Pain d'Autan, which processes the flour produced at the mill - The village of Corronsac and its heritage interpretation trail (planned for early 2026), the church of the Nativity of the Virgin with its bell tower reminiscent of that of the Basilica of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse. - Village of Rebigue: orientation table and panoramic view of the Pyrenees mountain range - Village of Pechbusque, 19th-century church of Saint-Jacques (IMH listed) and its Pietà, which can be seen inside - Garden of scents and colours and botanical trail in the hills above Ramonville Saint-Agne

This hike between ridges and valleys offers fine views over the Toulouse plain and the Lauragais farmlands, which change colour with the seasons. Discover the village of Baziège and its fertile hills shaped by the Autan wind. A stopover on the Roman road from Narbonne to Toulouse, Baziège was an important commercial centre in the Middle Ages. Its salt and wheat markets (in the 11th and 18th centuries) and then its pastel markets in the Renaissance contributed to its fortunes.

Here, more than anywhere else, the land undulates as if lifted by a swell triggered by the Autan wind. On this walk, just outside Toulouse, enjoy panoramic views of the Hers valley and the Montagne Noire from the hills of the Lauragais region of Toulouse. Along the way you'll discover : In Montgiscard: the 20th-century postcard-style Grand'Rue, Saint-André church (1541) In Donneville: Saint-Pierre church (1484) with its bell tower and wall, the 19th-century Chapillonie fountain In Deyme: the church of Sainte-Marie Madeleine (12th and 16th centuries), the shaded Alex Ouillac square with its plane trees, arbour and picnic tables. In Montbrun-Lauragais: the 1680 mill, the 19th-century church of Saint-Michel and several viewpoints. Beware of several road crossings, including the D24 (twice) and slippery terrain in wet weather.

A trail which follows the Canal du Midi. Possibility to do this on roller-skates or on foot. Discover this majestic canal built by Pierre-Paul Riquet with its centuries-old plane trees. The Canal du Midi, built starting in 1666, a total of 240 km long with its main purpose being to transport merchandise, notably grain grown in the Lauragais area until 1970. The Canal du Midi is classified as part of UNESCO’s World Heritage sites since December 5th 1996. The green trail (3metres wide) was established along the former tow path allows vacationers to peacefully discover the area's rich heritage at their own pace. The trail may be followed from Toulouse to Port Lauragais or the other way around with access possible at various points all along the way (for example at the canal-locks).

Starting out from Maurens, you can explore Lauragais. This 15km walk is suitable for all levels and takes around 3 hours 40 minutes. Following the extension of the Canal du Midi, this itinerary allows both cyclists and hikers to discover some of the picturesque aspects of the Canal de Garonne, frequently used by canal-barges and rich in its historical heritage. This is an ideal cycling trail for biking with your children or among friends, having no particular difficulties involved. The Canal du Garonne locks are characterized by their perfectly parallel lateral sides (called “bajoyers” which are the masonry containment walls of the lock) that are unlike the locks of the Canal du Midi which are oval shaped. They were all built in 1840 at the time when the canal was dug and these locks were changed to the Fraycinet standards in 1973 in order to allow 38 metres barges to pass through. It is possible to begin anywhere on the cycle path along the canal which has signs indicating its direction from Toulouse. Along the way you can discover the town of Grenade, a former bastide with its magnificent covered marketplace.

On the hills, south of Saint-Félix-Lauragais, a walk to discover Lauragais landscapes, Montagne Noire and the hilltop medieval village. This walk takes you in the hillsides of Saint-Félix-Lauragais, with superb views of the village and the Pyrenees on a clear day. Located at the gates of the Tarn, Lauragais and Tolosan country: in the historical triangle of Pastel, Verfeil, Cathar city (Verfuèlh in Occitan), opens its doors in the authentic setting of a medieval village. In the past, four gates allowed you to pass through the ramparts surrounding the town, two of them were fortified. These two gates are still standing: the Tolosane gate and the Vaureze gate. The latter owes its name to the fact that it is oriented towards Lavaur.Flanked by two " poivrières " (a masonry guardhouse with a conical roof) framing a renaissance pediment, it had a drawbridge at the time. In 1593, it was decided to raise it and to build a room above the passage.

Simple lock located on the Canal du Midi. The lockkeeper's house and the dovecote, as well as the port and the washhouse date from the construction of the canal. The washhouses, planned from the beginning, were severely regulated. Beware of anyone who came to wash their clothes without being authorized to do so! As for thefts of linen, they were punished by imprisonment. This covered wash-house is the oldest, with a bench and a fireplace to heat water.

Historical residence of Pierre-Paul Riquet, the brilliant inventor of the Canal du Midi, classified as a national historical monument since July 31, 2008 and certified Maison des Illustres. In the Garonne valley next to his house, Riquet set up his "test ponds". It is around this experimental complex, extending over nearly two hectares, that Riquet studied the water supply of his future Canal du Midi for about ten years. Double lock located on the Canal du Midi. Intact since it was rebuilt in the 13th century, its name recalls an anecdote: that of the capture of a boar "of enormous size" by the workers in charge of the construction of the work. The lockmaster's house dates from 1752. Listed as a historical monument since 1998.

A route in the heart of the village will allow you to cross the Vendinelle via the Pont-vieux, a 15th century structure from which a toll was collected, and to discover the classified windows of the flamboyant Gothic style of the Sarda de Caumont House, an outbuilding of the old castle. A former Gallo-Roman villa, Auriac sur Vendinelle is a picturesque village that was built around its castle in the 11th century. Its religious heritage is quite atypical. The square bell tower of the Sainte Marie Madeleine church is indeed the former keep of the fortress castle. The listed chapel of Noumérens, in Romanesque style, contains a fragment of an 8th century sarcophagus containing a chrism and a rosette, symbols of the early Christian Church.

The Négra lock was one of the stops of the "Barque de Poste" which provided passenger transport between Toulouse and Agde from 1681. From Toulouse, the boats arrived for lunch at the Négra lock (dinner). Travellers found nearby an inn, a cooler to cool drinks and a chapel that can still be visited. Consecrated in 1096, the basilica is a masterpiece of Romanesque art.
