The covered market replaces the one that disappeared in the fire of 1282 at the end of the 15th century. It was modified in the 17th century to stabilize it. A span was removed to build a hard limestone gable. The weekly market is always there. As well as the traditional fat poultry fair (it has existed for more than 90 years) which takes place on the second Saturday of December each year.

Saint-Martin Church is located in the heart of the village of Egreville. It is built on the foundations and some walls of an earlier chapel that disappeared in a large fire in the 13th century. It was damaged during the hundred-year war and rebuilt in the 15th century. The belfry that served as a watchtower is attached to the church in the sixteenth century and becomes its main entrance. The arrow is added in the seventeenth.

The church was formerly a priory-cure whose origin dates back to the 11th or 12th century. Before 1730 there was only one nave. In 1737 and during 2 years it was rebuilt on a larger scale while retaining the old bell tower. Called at one time the “New Church” its first stone was laid 25th April 1737. The construction was completed and it was officially received on 4th November 1739. It was in 1787 that the bell tower was demolished to build the gate and the tower as we see them today. The tower has a slate covered pyramid with a stone staircase. The church is dedicated to St Maurice, martyr of Agaune in Valais.

By the 40th day after mobilisation the German High Command expected to have brought the French and British armies to a decisive battle and destroyed them. This conclusion to Schlieffen’s famous Plan relied on the Russians taking at least this length of time to mobilise via their poor railway system. The BEF played a small but significant part in the battle of the Marne even though Field Marshall French had seriously contemplated removing his men from the action to reform and rest. However, this major battle was largely won through the determination and courage of the French soldiers and their leaders. The French snatched a conclusive victory from what looked like an imminent defeat. The German High Command failed in its attempt to capture Paris and force the French government to capitulate. The ‘race to the sea’ now followed, in which the Allies and Central Powers atempted to outflank each other. The line of trenches was then settled from the North Sea to Switzerland. The Allies and the Central Powers now knew that the war would continue far longer than they had thought. The next few years would be spent in learning how to fight a new kind of war with new weapons in the air and on the ground. The price of this process would be paid in blood.

This Cistercian abbey, founded in the 12th century by Saint Bernard, remains a French masterpiece of monastic architecture. Famous Abbey transformed into a prison by Napoleon. In the Middle Ages, the Collegiate of St Pierre-es-liens had a chapter of 13 canons. Built in the 13th century, the 10 side chapels were added in the 16th century. Classified Historical Monument, it is a remarkable witness of the Gothic style.

At the gates of Champagne and Burgundy, nestling in a bend of the Seine, Mussy sur Seine is home to the richest, perhaps even the most original heritage of the Aube area. A medieval town fortified according to the wishes of local nobility and the bishops of Langres, Mussy sur Seine retains numerous interesting testimonies of its turbulent past, starting with its maze of picturesque alleyways, old houses and fortifications. The 13th century church, beautiful 16th century residences, a promenade and two 19th century castles set un well-designed grounds make up the other elegant part of the picture, made even more attractive by its surrounding vine-planted hillsides and woodlands.

In Paris, Pierre-Auguste Renoir meets a young provincial native of Essoyes, Aline Victorine Charigot. Attracted by the beauty and generous forms of the young 18 year old girl, the artist asks her to pose for him. She becomes his model, and later his wife, but above all the mother of his three sons, Pierre the actor, Jean the filmmaker and Claude the ceramist. In 1885, she brings her husband to Essoyes. Conquered and charmed by the landscape and way of life of the villagers, Renoir and his family come back every summer for 30 years. The family home, purchased in 1896, welcomes not only Renoir, but many of his friends. The painter finds in Champagne the inspiration and the models of his canvasses through the laundresses of the village, his children and Gabrielle Renard, who becomes the nanny of Jean, but also his favourite model. Born in 1841, it was in 1896 that the painter bought his first property. And it is Essoyes, village of his wife Aline Charigot, that Renoir chooses. Here he found the calm and serenity that brought him the joy of family reunions mainly in the summer and many themes encouraging his work; the market, the landscape, church, models … * The Painter’s Workshop Built in 1906, not to disturb the children in their games, Renoir painted many paintings here. The ground floor invites you to discover the different facets of this artist: his appeal for colours, his desire for sculptures, his attraction for portraits… In the centre of the room, as in levitation, the painter’s wheelchair, symbol of the courage and devotion of the man who preferred to give up walking rather than painting. Next door, projected on a canvas, some paintings made in Essoyes. On the first floor, discover some authentic objects. The sculptures, of course, but also the transport box that was used to repatriate the paintings made here to Paris. A rare document film allows you to observe the painter at work.
