Unveiling the charm of Hubert-folie, Calvados

This Cindais Hill 67 Memorial was inaugurated on Sunday, June 6, 2010. This place was the starting point of the Canadian offensive to repel the German counter-attack in July 1944. This Memorial is presented as a path along which are erected stelae dedicated to each regiment. It is part of the historical circuits of the region. The site also offers a panorama of the neighbouring towns of May sur Orne, Saint-André-sur-Orne and the beginning of the Orne valley.

St. Martin's Church had fishbone walls and a side door topped by a lintel decorated with a T-shaped cross. The church was destroyed during the heavy fighting in 1944. It was rebuilt in a contemporary style.

Some even feel the need to do so. A symbolic place, the house of the director of the mines, which became the town hall of May-sur-Orne, is now intended to host a "place of memory". The development of this place is based on a will well inscribed in the present time, and its existence is based on a living memory carried by an association. The aim of this project? To enrich the present by giving meaning to the traces of the past. 5 exhibition rooms, 50 information panels and testimonies, 3 models, objects, photos ... (XXth) The neo-Romanesque church built in 1874 having been destroyed in 1944, the architect Pierre Bienvenue opted for a monumental composition, combining Caen stone and concrete around a square plan. The copper-covered spire accentuates the verticals of the building. Very sober, the interior is illuminated by large concrete and glass paved canopies representing Christ and the Virgin, works of Pinson and Barillet. The large cross which surmounts the altar and the communion table was forged in the workshops of the mine. Described as the Sainte Chapelle de la Plaine, the church of May is a singular building Listed as a Historical Monument.

(XVIIIth) Owner of a department store in Caen, the Druelle family gives its name to this house which was once linked to the Harcourt road by a large avenue of trees. The facade is characterized by a pink plaster and a symmetrical composition around a central forebody. Castle built in Caen stone and May sandstone.

This monument was inaugurated during the Saint Barbara's Day ceremony in December 1962. The design of this memorial had been decided by Mr Vincent, director of the mine, as well as representatives of the mining communes of May sur Orne. The decision, taken unanimously by the members, followed the announcement of the forthcoming closure of the mines of May and took into account the desire to keep some memories attached to the mining activity of the last 50 years, in particular the plaques fixed until then in the entrance hall of the large offices and on which are inscribed the names of staff members who disappeared, either in the field of honour or at work in the Mine. The monument was imagined by Pierre Bienvenu, architect, and realized by the company Générini. It is a monument 2 meters high and 12 meters long built both in concrete and sandstone of May, in which the statue of Saint Barbara, patron saint of miners, was placed. Along the Voie Verte downhill from Caen, after Etavaux, you enter the Armorican Massif, made up of ancient rocks, those also found in Suisse Normande. At this precise spot, the Orne has uncovered a series of rectified rocks, a trace of an ancient folded mountain chain: this is what is known as the syncline, a geological ensemble that resembles a thousand sheets of rock that appear like leaves on the edge of a book. In the area of May sur Orne, this structure is all the more evident as many traces of exploitation have left visible rocks: iron mines, paving stone quarries, marble quarries.. The most prestigious site is the Laize quarry (May/Orne), where you can see the rocks from before the syncline below (the schists found in the Boucle du Hom for example), the rectified rocks of the syncline and the rocks above: the limestones of the Caen plain, which belong to another geological group: the Parisian Basin Over the few kilometres between the Laize quarry in the south and Feuguerolles-Bully in the north, one will have come across marble, conglomerates, sandstones of various kinds, shales, iron ore, travertine, ampelites... more than 600 million years of earth's history can be read there, summing up almost entirely the geological history of the region.

(XII-XIII) The church tower adjoining the south side of the choir has two levels of blind arcatures decorated with chevrons and meanders characteristic of Norman Romanesque architecture. A gabled roof crowns the ensemble. The bell tower and the Romanesque style choir are classified as historical monuments.
