"Le Guilhaumard", it’s a karst plateau like no other, a Larzacian islet on the edge of the department of Hérault. Its specific geology and climate make it an eden for botanists. A real discovery!1 - From the walkers’ car park, cross the track and take in front a rocky path, then, a path that, further, goes down to the farm of les Aires. Take it on left on 200m.2- Before the farm, turn right on the trail and go down to Sorgues.The Sorgues resurgence is just before the hamlet on the left (go and back).3 – Cross the hamlet and continue on the road on 2,5km. Turn left to La Mouline, pass over the Sorgues and then continue towards Saint-Rome-de-Berlières, on 800m.4 - Turn on the left hairpin road, ford the stream and continue on the dirt track. Turn left on a path in the middle of boxwood and juniper, then follow the shaded path which climbs and arrives on the plateau at the “Pas de Tirecul”.5 – On the plateau, (you can observe in spring and in the beginning of summer a lot of orchids), turn left and walk along the edge of the plateau  walking on tracks or old “caussenard” paths to join the Mas Raynal.6 – Take the road in direction of Cabanes. Before the hamlet, turn right on the track and follow it on 500m to reach the car park.

A trip outside La Couvertoirade, in an agropastoral landscape: ideal for understanding the daily life of inhabitants of this fortified village at the time of Templars and Hospitallers.Through the parking, you have to get the ramparts of the village at the north gate and go through the village on the left to join the church.You can leave the village by the small door of access located between the church and the castle. Walking up and down till Moulin de Redounel, you have to take down on the way back to the left along the ramparts to lavogne.Follow the road in left approximately for 250 m and to pass beyond a disused barn. To veer right on the track that rises smoothly on the tray. After a wide turn, it turns towards south and reaches 1 km, at a fork.To leave GR de Pays to go down in right through the pasture of 100 m, then to appear on a dirt track. To follow it towards west for 900 m and reach an intersection with the GR 71.To turn right on the stony path. Being narrow, it then widens and passes through a small oak wood. You have to go through the Boussière, then in a small meadow and continue through the hollow road that leads to the foot of the wall, facing the south gate.To enter the village through the south door and to the car park via the north door.

Follow on the right for 200 meters the small road to a cross (776m). Oblique left. At the crossroads, take the D185 on 800 meters.Turn right onto a dirt road.Before an intersection of tracks, turn left on an old path that joins a track. Turn left and join the small road to La Salvetat at a bend. Turn left and go down to the underpass. Go under the motorway and turn left on the old Roman road to a grove.Turn left, go down to the motorway fence, follow it to the left, take the underground passage, cross the D185 and take in front a path lined with low walls and boxwoods which leads back to La Couvertoirade.

Cross the road and take the path that is almost in front to ride on a track for about 1km before meeting the road that goes to the “Domaine de Gaillac” (equestrian center, museum of Southern Aveyron Traditions and restaurant).Cross it and continue on a succession of tracks and single-track paths to the road that leads to the famous fortified village of La Couvertoirade (follow it on the left to visit the Templar and hospitaller site).Turn right to get to the D55 and go straight on the road D185 towards “La Pezade” on 700m, then turn right on a track to La Salvetat.  After the beautiful typical farm, leave the road to enter a box hedge, parallel to a track  and continue to “Le Cun” following a series of magnificent box-lined paths.At “Le Cun” turn right and continue on a well-rolling track for 2km until “La Blaquèrerie”. Cross the village to reach the D7.Follow it on the left for 400m then take the right track for 600m before finding a single-track that goes left. Continue on this magnificent path for 1km until "Fontvive", pass in front of the building and go on for 300m.At the junction with the old railway, turn right and continue for 4km, then take the trail on the right to go back to the car park.

This magnificent tour immerses you in the heart of the remarkable Cirque de Navacelles and its founding river, the Vis. The pubescent oak (Quercus pubescens) is widespread in the areas of the south of France. Its leaves are hairy on their underside, which is an adaptation to drought (the hairs limit evaporation and retain moisture). In the arid Causses of Larzac to the north and Blandas to the south, the river Vis has carved out an impressive green furrow, dominated at its heart by a hill. This is the Cirque de Navacelles, a geological curiosity shaped by 600,000 years of patient labor. Straddling the departments of Gard and Hérault, the Vis river has carved out its bed in the limestone of the southern causses (Blandas and Larzac), forming vast meanders. Over time, erosion of the rock has enabled the river to cut its course as short as possible, abandoning its former bed. Thus was born the Cirque de Navacelles. To discover it in its entirety, don't miss the 300m-deep descent to the bottom of the cirque. Here, in a green oasis on the banks of the Vis waterfall, lies the village of Navacelles. A botanical trail, accessible to all, has been laid out here. Today, the cirque de Navacelles is a member of the Grands Sites de France, and boasts over 250,000 visitors a year. Since 2011, it has been nestled in the heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site (Causse & Cévennes). The heritage of the Cirque de Navacelles Grand Site The joint work of man and nature, the former has used all its power to sculpt the material and shape the site's geological outlines, while the latter has patiently created the "finishing touches": built islands, roads, bridges and paths, low walls supporting the terraces, all at the cost of laborious work to shape the relief. The Cirque de Navacelles Grand Site boasts a magnificent heritage of archaeology, geomorphology and agropastoralism. Hiking and outdoor activities The Grand Site du Cirque de Navacelles is a territory where nature and heritage reveal themselves to those who take the time to observe, listen and smell... Free walks are a wonderful way to discover the fauna and flora, as well as the heritage: lavognes, pastoral enclosures, old bread ovens... Reference books are available to help you discover them (cartoguide, rando-fiche...). THE BELVEDERES OF BLANDAS Situated just 3 minutes from the village of Blandas, the belvederes offer three breathtaking viewpoints over the Cirque de Navacelles and the Vis gorges. The Maison de Site houses a tourist documentation area, a permanent exhibition on agropastoralism, a film showing archaeological discoveries made on the Causse and in the Cirque de Navacelles, a local produce store and a restaurant serving local produce. The facilities are accessible to the disabled. Since July 2013, the "Chênes", "Doline" and "Cascade" lookouts on the Causse de Blandas offer visitors an overview of the grandiose geomorphology of the Cirque de Navacelles and establish a respectful dialogue between Man and Earth. Located at the foot of the Larzac Causse, in the south-west of Nant, the Durzon Spring is a karstic resurgence whose supplying basin extends over 100km² between L'Hospitalet du Larzac, Le Caylar, Cazejourdes and Egalières. The Karstic system doesn't retains water on surface and constitutes big undergroung water reserves. The flow of the source varies between 0,8m3/s and 35m3/s and has an average temperature of 11,13°C. The Durzon river runs for 6km and flows into the Dourbie river at the place "La Mouline".

The village of Ambouls, municipality of Nant, built on the right bank of the Dourbie River, would date from the installation of the Romans in the area of Nant.The hillock of Ambouls peak (641 m high) was fortified in the Iron Age from 700 or 600 BC., a clear sign of an older occupation.On the peak or “gallo-Roman oppidum”, pieces of pottery were discovered 40 years ago and are preserved at the Museum of Montrozier.On the east side we can still see todays the entrance of the “grotte des fées” (cave of the fairies), where Ernest André discovered in 1913 human bones dating from around 4500 BC.Ambouls is one of those agricultural hamlets, emptied by the rural exodus, but which recovers now a new soul, thanks to the city dwellers who come back and restore the houses.Some houses are typical with the external stone staircase, the porch and under the stable which opens on a wide arched porch.You can also discover an original fireplace above an old bread oven and a stone cross from 1710.

In the 19th century, the copper mines were the valley's biggest employer. They closed in the early 20th century, bringing about the economic decline of Arrigas. The trays for washing the ore can still be seen alongside the D 189, as you leave the village towards Peyraube. The railway did not bring the hoped-for prosperity since, for technical reasons, no station could be built at Arrigas. To take the train, one had to walk to the neighbouring village of Aumessas. The city of Nant obtained in 1369 the right to have fairs and markets, right granted by the Duke of Anjou. In the 15th century, the privileges of the city are confirmed: weekly markets are held there, 4 annual fairs are conceded, one of which lasted 3 days on November, 2, 3 and 4.The covered market was rebuilt in 1706 an 1707, the first stone was laid on March, 13, 1706.It is a squat, rectangular construction (30 m long and 8 m wide) with 12 pillars supporting the vault, interconnected by a semicircular arch.On a pillar, a plaque commemorates the events of August 14 and 15, 1944 when two Nant’s civilians and seven maquisards from “Maquis des Corsaires” were shot.Listed in the inventory of Historic Monuments since April 13, 1944.

Established on the ground floor of the presbytery adjoining the church of Saint-Paul-des-Fonts, the botanical space is dedicated to the life and work of the canon Hippolyte Coste who shared his life between the duties of his ministry and his passion for botany.This rouergate of modest peasant origins, which has been nicknamed "le curé des fleurs" (the priest of the flowers), knew how to rise in the yard of the greatest botanists by realizing in particular the remarkable and masterful «Flore descriptive et illustrée de la France, de la Corse et des contrées limitrophes» (1901 – 1906) which constitutes its masterpiece, known and still recognized today at the European scale.With this museum Saint-Paul-des-Fonts becomes an unmissable destination for all those who wish to learn by discovering the botanical wealth of the Larzac and Aveyron.Open from april to septembre. Between the Col de l'Airette and the Col des Tempêtes, you may notice ruined buildings below the track. They are vestiges of former sheepfolds, where the flocks moving up from the valley could shelter for the night or in bad weather. (Jérôme Reversat)
