Rigole et Rocher du Diable

Rigole et Rocher du Diable

Description

Picturesque site in the upper Thaurion valley. Classified Natura 2000 and listed in the ZNIEFF inventory. The Rigole du Diable and its tributary are strewn with pebbles and boulders. The unusual Roche du Diable (Devil's Rock) can be found near the old Planchette mill.
Legendary stones are a common sight in the Limousin. These strangely shaped balls, created by the erosion of outcropping granite, have often captured the imagination of local people. The legend of the Rigole du Diable (Devil's Ditch) is a good illustration of the beliefs of yesteryear: an old monk from Châtain, known throughout the region for his sanctity, appealed to the Devil to build a diversion canal. The monk offered to carry out the work from midnight until dawn. If the work wasn't completed before the cock crowed, the devil would receive no pay. If the work was completed, the devil would have the right to take away
