Saint Grat Chapel

Saint Grat Chapel
Saint Grat Chapel

Description

It is located in the woods at an altitude of 850m, above Matringes. The chapel is dedicated to the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph, and to Saint Grat. Saint Grat, bishop of Aosta in the 5th century, is highly venerated by farmers.
In the past, not a month went by in Savoy without a procession, mass or invocation to this saint.
Indeed, the peasants believed that the air could be unhealthy at the beginning of spring.
Saint Grat was therefore prayed to to ward off insects and animals harmful to crops, particularly chafer beetles, grasshoppers and rats.

The chapel was founded on April 24, 1697. It suffered the same fate as other religious buildings, being partially destroyed and abandoned during the French Revolution.
Thanks to the faith and courage of Joseph Gaudin and his wife Marie Humbert, the chapel was renovated in 1865.
They rebuilt the chapel and its interior decorations at their own expense.

In the past, when dark clouds heralding storms covered the ridges of Le Môle, the bell of the Chapelle Saint Grat was rung.

The chapel was also visited on June 22 to protect crops from insects.
