4 September 1914: The 106th RI crosses the village. Maurice Genevoix sees general staff cars, requisitioned buses (for soldiers’ supplies), forest rangers and policemen.
For the first time he wonders: “Is it a defeat?” He feels like they are heading towards Bar-le-Duc. The rumour of the day is a worrying one:
“We’re going to Paris to keep order there”.
