20 September: The front grinds to a standstill and the warring armies fix their positions. Some strategic locations become tragic symbols of this static warfare. The 106th RI is then sent to Les Hauts de Meuse to stop the German troops from invading Verdun from the south. After leaving Louvemont, Maurice Genevoix and Those of 14 pass through the village of Fleury:
“this morning, the regiment had an easy passage via Douaumont, Fleury and Eix, through a (…) and wooded area, where levees covered in grass stretched out in front of the forts, providing a glimpse of their crushed cupolas” (Quote from the book by Maurice Genevoix, Ceux de 14, Editions Flammarion)
