Included on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2000, the cathedral of Notre Dame in Tournai is aweinspiring simply because of its size: a huge Romanesque nave and aisles lead to the broad transepts (67 metres wide), with an apsidal chapel at each end and five high towers above the crossing. The impressive Gothic chancel is 54 metres long, and its ceiling is 33 metres high, with some architectural features reminiscent of the Sainte- Chapelle in Paris.
