THE CALVARY

Description

The work of sculptor Edme Bouchardon and foundryman A. This monumental calvary is located on the heights of Remiremont, near the Charles David promenade and the Champ de Mars. Presented to the town by Charles Marie David (1780-1868), former Director General of Customs, State Councillor and benefactor of the hospital and the town, it depicts the Virgin Mary and Saint John surrounding Christ on the cross on a granite step.

Erected in 1858 by the town with the agreement of one of its children, it was blessed by the Bishop of Saint-Dié. Part of the inscription recounting Napoleon III's visit in 1856 was removed after 1872. The latter had climbed this site on 6 July 1856 to salute the sign of the Redemption.

Today, the site offers an exceptional view of Remiremont, ideal for photographs. Close to the kiosk and the Charles David promenade, it's a family-friendly walk that's also suitable for pushchairs.
