Designated a "Maison des illustres" and a "Remarkable Garden", the Harmas Jean-Henri Fabre is the final resting place of naturalist Jean-Henri Fabre, the all-rounder whose life has been watched over by the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle since 1922.
He moved here in 1879 and made it his open-air laboratory. The rustic farmhouse, with its pink facade and green shutters, and its one-hectare park with its Mediterranean vegetation, offer visitors an instructive and moving journey into the history of a 19th-century scientist.
The family home
This rustic residence has lost none of its charm. The spirit of the place has been preserved, and the historic rooms have been completely renovated, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the life of Jean-Henri Fabre, both entomologist and botanist. From the dining room to the study, imagine the daily life and world of this passionate researcher.
A learned wasteland
In the pleasure garden, relax on the terrace, admire the pond and flowerbeds, and linger in the vegetable garden. The part of the Harmas once given over to scrubland is home to incredible biodiversity. Explore this favorite observation ground for naturalists. And don't miss his ingenious insect study devices!
A genius jack-of-all-trades
Three modern theme rooms sketch the portrait and retrace the singular life of J.-H. Fabre, who combined scientific rigor, literary talent, pedagogical skill and artistic sensibility. Discover an abundance of work, the itinerary of a man firmly rooted in his time, and the influence of an extraordinary self-taught man.
Well worth the detour
Let yourself be guided by the signposting and sound system, which creates a complicity with Aglaé, J.-H. Fabre's daughter. Her anecdotes plunge you into memories of her father. Other surprises include a graphic novel dedicated to the naturalist, and a screening of his short film La cigale... A visit to be savored without moderation!
One destination, one ticket, two sites
The Harmas Jean-Henri Fabre and the Naturoptère, two adjoining partner sites, offer a unique encounter with biodiversity. Push open the door to the estate of a great figure in the natural sciences and enjoy a rich and original visit. And let yourself be tempted by the cultural and educational center's activities designed for all ages.
