Château de Brie-Comte-Robert

Château de Brie-Comte-Robert
Château de Brie-Comte-Robert

Description

The castle built by Robert I of Dreux, brother of King Louis VII (the Younger), at the end of the 12th century, is a square enclosure surrounded by a moat.
Eight towers flank the curtain wall, two of which, the Tour de Brie and the Tour Saint Jean (highest tower), square towers, overlook the entry gates which were defended by a portcullis / murder hole / double door combination, a system which established itself towards the end of the 12th century. The building is the object of archaeological excavations and significant restorations are in progress, led by the Association des Amis du Vieux Château since 1982.

Inside the castle wall, the volunteers offer you a visit to the Heritage Interpretation Centre which houses an archaeological exhibition retracing the history of the castle though various objects and archive documents.
