The Cortalets refuge was one of the first to be built in the Pyrenees (1899). It is located at 2150 m and gives access to the summit of Canigou at an altitude of 2784 m. It is one of the stages of the crossing of the Pyrenees (GR 10 and HRP).
The Canigou massif is the symbolic mountain of the Catalan country (classified as a major site of France in 2012).It is the last major summit in the eastern Pyrenees and is a formidable belvedere on the eastern part of the Pyrenean chain. From the refuge, you can look out over the Roussillon plain bordered by the Mediterranean Sea. Here the mountains are close to the sea.The hiker will find on arrival a large refuge made of cut stone surrounded by a sparse forest from which emerge the Canigou and the Pic Barbet. From the plain, many paths of all difficulties crisscross the massif to reach the refuge. The difference in altitude and the latitude of the place make it possible to cross all levels of vegetation, from Mediterranean flora to alpine flora.Climbing friends, you will also find many fully equipped climbing routes, some of which will delight beginners in multi-pitch mountain routes. "Traditional mountaineers" will also find routes in adventure terrain. The hut keeper will be able to show you some of them, since he has opened some of them!During your stay you will have the opportunity to eat cooked dishes mainly based on local and organic products. Here the specialty is fresh pasta made in the refuge!
