Some 15 km from Bordeaux in the direction of Libourne, Château de Vayres, former property of King Henri IV, is a remarkable historical site in more ways than one. The feudal origin of this important defensive stronghold can be found in the square keep, the castelet and the towers. It was in the 17th century that Vayres took on the appearance of a Renaissance castle.
Note its classical facade, the refinement of the main gallery, which was designed by the architect of the Cordouan Lighthouse, and its monumental double-revolution staircase above the moat. Exceptional collection of tapestries
At the Château de Vayres, stroll through the elegant formal gardens overlooking the left bank of the Dordogne. An enigmatic journey through the history of the castles fascinates young and old alike and, every summer, the Cape and Sword Festival brings together the region's finest swordsmen.
