The Durance Valley hides natural phenomena that are unusual to say the least: the "Demoiselles Coiffées" or "Fairy Chimneys". Take the height from our observation points and enjoy exceptional panoramas!
These spectacular geological formations are the result of rain and torrential erosion, and can be recognised by their tall columns topped by a rocky cap. There are two villages in the Durance Valley where you can get close to them by car or on foot.
- AT THÉUS: the 65-hectare site has been listed since 1939. The Vallauria torrent basin contains a whole series of capped columns and is a real geomorphological curiosity. There are so many formations here that they are referred to as the "Salle de Bal" (ballroom)
Get a bird's eye view of them from our two lookout points!
The "Ballroom Terrace", inaugurated in 2018, offers a view of these natural gems accompanied by a picture-postcard backdrop overlooking the Durance Valley. Thanks to its deckchairs, tables, benches and information panels, you'll be able to recharge your batteries in peace and quiet.
STARTS FROM THÉUS: a choice of a blue route and a longer red route that takes in the lookouts on the terrace, before descending to the car park. Start: Théus before the village of Théus, in the last bend on the D53A: start sign at the car park, take the forest track that crosses the torrent.
4 km 1h30 +320 m, longer option.
- ACCESS BY CAR:
> BELVEDÈRES DE THÉUS: after passing through the village of Théus and its winding road (RD53), turn right at the hamlet of Le Poët (D53A) to the first belvedere and its car park.
If you continue a little further you can enjoy an exceptional 360° view, at Mont Colombis culminating at 1734 m (accessible by car).
Free access.
