Saint-Michel Church

Description

The church was built in the 12th and 15th centuries. A charter from 919 mentions the village of Chazelles and a church dedicated to Saint-Michel and belonging to the Savigny abbey.
The 3 crossbeams preceding the choir, as well as part of the Chapelle Saint-Jean and the Chapelle de la Sainte Vierge, probably date back to the oldest part of the Château (commandery), i.e. the 13th century (1220 - 1240).
In the 15th and 16th centuries, the church was enlarged with the construction of another bay and chapels on the south side (Place J.B. Galland). In 1827, the last two bays, the lower north side, the chapels and the present bell tower were built. In the early 20th century, the gallery was added, and in 1966, the interior was restored. The facade of the square bell tower has a double-tiered, flat-roofed bay window above a tripartite screen facade punctuated by powerful pilasters.
The portal and part of the facade are built of Lyonnais conchylian limestone, a stone composed of highly visible fossilized shells.
