In the 12th century, it was a stone quarry, especially alberese, the same limestone that was used to build the splendid Saint-Denis Basilica.
Later, mushroom growers took over this exceptional place and transformed the town of Carrière into the mushroom capital of Europe.
Today, the quarry has been regenerated and listed as an architectural heritage zone. It has become the Espace Carrara / Carrara City, a leading arts venue: sculpture, film, dance, photography, painting and its natural underground setting make it a great place for all forms of creative expression.
