Until the French Revolution, the square was occupied by the Récollets convent. After the floods, the City of Paris financed the construction of the hall that would house the Chasselas market. The design incorporates classical elements such as the Tuscan columns at the corners, and brick, but the building also makes room for more modern materials such as metal, glass and concrete.
Decorations in geometric shapes highlight the bunches of grapes on the exterior walls.
