In Roman times, the temple of Jupiter Penninus stood on the site of the present-day church, giving rise to the name of the commune. The castle we know today is the 4th to be built on the same foundations. It was built in 1766 by Michel Louis Fréteau de Saint Just. The castle's existence is attested as far back as 1050 by a royal edict, preserved in the Bibliothèque nationale, which mentions Peny as the lord of the fief. It has Roman foundations.
The castle has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1946.
