Church of Saint Etienne

Church of Saint Etienne

Description

The bell tower was built on the site of an ancient Gallo-Roman tower.
A first sanctuary, dedicated to Saint Stephen, was built around the year 1000 on the site of the current church.
Some remains of the 12th century can still be seen in the church (square pillars with bare carving). After having the village of Vaux demolished to build his château, Fouquet obtained permission to restore the church in the nearby village rather than rebuild the one in Vaux.
The restoration was carried out under the direction of Louis Le Vau, architect of Vaux-le-Vicomte, in the 1660s.
The Sommier family, who bought the Vaux-le-Vicomte estate in 1889, also took a great interest in the church: major work was carried out until the outbreak of the First World War.
