Description

En 1853, les plans d’un nouveau Palais de Justice, réclamé par les magistrats bressuirais, sont confiés à un architecte parisien. L’édifice est un bon témoin de l’architecture officielle du Second Empire (portes en plein cintre, fenêtres rectangulaires, fronton triangulaire, statue de Thémis, déesse de la Justice et de la Loi). Il sera terminé en 1870, en même temps que la prison voisine. Cette dernière fut démolie en 1968 pour aménager l’actuelle place Charles de Gaulle.
