Between the land of Rabelais and the land of Renaudot, between the limestone mounds and the peat of the wetlands, Beuxes owes its reputation to Rabelais on the occasion of Gargantua’s birth. This toponym comes from Buxus which means «boxwood».The church of Saint Léger has a Romanesque architecture with carved corbels, one in the shape of a barrel, a little nod to the sculptors in Gargantua. Beuxes is a territory of mills as evidenced by many places, notably the mill of Comprigny (can be visited on appointment). In Loudunais, where truffle is harvested over the centuries, the miller Pierre Mauléon developed its crop in Grand-Ponçay around 1790.
