According to legend, the origin of the village's name comes from a golden statue, a gift of Sainte Radegonde in person in the sixth century. The village seems to have been occupied since the period of the First Iron Age; this being attested by the discovery in 1843 of more than a hundred remains of axes and swords, the most important pieces of which are preserved in the Sainte-Croix Museum of Poitiers. The village would correspond to an old place of worship, which became in medieval times, a stop on the way to Santiago de Compostela.
