Description

This church, overlooking the village of Saint-Sauveur, belonged to the Commanderie de la Foucaudière, founded by the Antonine Order in 1366. Devastated during the Hundred Years? War, it was first repaired (late 14th century), then, thanks to numerous donations, underwent a vast campaign of work led by Commander Laurent Imbert in 1493. The church was almost completely rebuilt in the Flamboyant Gothic style, characterized by richly decorated bays, accolade arches and multi-ribbed (prismatic) ogives. Burnt down in 1567 during the Wars of Religion, it was restored in the early 17th century. The Antonine order, until then flourishing, declined and only two canons resided at the commandery when, in 1776, the order was attached to the Knights of Malta. During the French Revolution, the church was sold as national property.
