This historic defensive structure is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The structure is made up of three defensive fortresses, designed to close the navigation channels to potential invaders: the Citadelle de Blaye, the Fort Pâté, and our Fort Médoc constitute the estuary's famous "Bolt". Since the site was constructed, the Gironde has been largely impenetrable.
Offering easy access to Bordeaux, the Gironde Estuary has always been a coveted strategic location, and a vital defensive stronghold for the town. The seventeenth century royal engineer Vauban was tasked with the design and construction of this breath-taking defensive triptych, a unique edifice in France. In Cussac-Fort-Médoc, on the left bank, visitors discover the Porte Royale guard house, the ideal starting point to discover the site's enthralling history as part of a guided tour!
