Son nom vient du « Bac », bateau à fond plat servant à traverser un cours d’eau, qui assurait la liaison entre les deux rives. Entre les deux grandes guerres, il a été construit un pont amovible qui a été détruit lors de la deuxième Guerre Mondiale. A nouveau, un bac assurant assurait la liaison avant la construction du pont actuel.
Ce hameau de Wavrin vivait presque en autarcie. On y trouvait une auberge, un restaurant-hôtel. Il fut le lieu d’arrêt des péniches et bateliers. La physionomie a changé avec les travaux de mise à grand gabarit et l’aménagement du Parc de la Deûle, notamment du territoire de la Gîte.
