This gate and the buildings forming the guardhouse were built in 1825 to prevent passers-by from crossing the Citadelle Haute. Hence the name Porte Neuve for this entrance to the fortress. The name was predestined, as this architectural ensemble has been completely restored in recent years. Since May 2023, the guardhouse has been transformed into a private museum where you can follow the First World War through sketches by Michel Dupré and photographs by Pierre Brancher, two poilus who fought on the battlefield.
You'll also find a restaurant and an antique store inside.
