Château des Portes

Description

The château consists of a main building with a canted tower on the main façade (clad in chestnut shingles) and a rectangular keep at the rear. The latter appears to be the oldest part. It is covered by a gable roof. The first trace of the lords of Château des Portes dates back to the 12th-13th centuries. They were the Durat family. In the 14th century, Jean de Durat received several titles and honorary offices for services rendered to the French crown. He became Bailli d?épée et de Combraille and captain of the Château d?Auzances. The memory of his marriage to Claude de Mier is engraved on the imposing fireplace in the Salle des Gardes. Over the centuries, the château passed through the hands of various families, including the Comtes d?Arfeuille and the De Bonnevie.
