Originally named "Vallis petrosus" (stony valley) in Latin and then "Valpetrus" in the Middle Ages, the village of Orpierre is widely related to the cliffs that surround it. Orpierre was a walled town in the 14th century with a perched castle between two cliffs to the east of the village. Orpierre also had several mines in the north and they were mined for gold, silver, lead and copper. Today it is once again thanks to the rocks (and climbing practiced there) that Orpierre is prosperous again.
