Let us tell you the story of this medieval fortress built in the 11th century, which impresses with the power of its defensive system and its 355-metre curtain wall. The 26-metre-high keep was transformed into a residence by Catherine de Thouars, wife of the famous Gilles de Rais, who added elegant sculpted fireplaces and cushioned windows.
The keep can be visited during the Pouzauges town tours in season and all year round by prior arrangement for groups. The grounds are open to walkers all year round and offer magnificent views over the Vendée bocage, as well as picnic tables for quiet refreshments.
