The Lovers - Vincent Van Gogh (1853 - 1890) Paris, May 1887 - oil on canvas, 75 x 113 cm
Van Gogh called this sunny park scene "Les Amoureux". Couples in love
stroll under the young Chestnut trees along the paths. He uses a free variation of the technique pointillists. They developed their compositions by paint dots. Van Gogh, in his way, applied small strokes of brushes in different directions. This helped him create the effect of a radiant spring day and the sense of intimacy he wanted to express. He had wanted to start a family, but he had impossible romantic relationships. He resigned himself finally to his situation and devoted himself totally to his art.
