It was designed in 1661 to link the Bassin d'Arcachon to Bayonne through the Landes ponds. This idea gave rise to numerous projects during the 17th and 18th centuries, but all of them were never implemented. In 1838, the canal finally saw the light of day and enabled the transport of goods. In 1860, silted up, it was definitively condemned for navigation
Since the end of navigation on the canal, it has evolved like a natural meandering river and conceals a particularly rich fauna of fish, otters, water birds, turtles....
