"Atalaye" means "promontory" in Basque
Generations have walked this promontory from where the Biarrots watched out for whales,
were waiting for the fishermen to return, spotting the enemy ship.
In order to deal with matters of general interest, the "corps of the commune and the common people" gathered "in capitu" on the Atalaye. They discussed the raising of men for the king's wars, the requisitioning of bargemen and boats, the difficulties due to the
numerous desertions.
