Created in 1801 by Bonaparte who chose fifteen cities in France to display a collection of works from both former king’s collections and spoils of war, particularly from Italy; Bordeaux Museum of Fine Art is located behind Rohan Palace, in the city centre.
It has an exhaustive panorama of the main trends in western art from the Renaissance to modern day with its collection of paintings, sculptures and drawings showing European art from the 16th to the 20th century, major Bordeaux artists of the 19th and 20th centuries and the main trends in western art from the Renaissance to the Second World War. Opposite the museum, the Gallery of Fine Art completes the permanent collection by regularly hosting temporary exhibitions.
