Mons and its church occupy a special place in the region, located on an ancient north-south road leading to Spain (ancient road then pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela).
Ancient texts tell us that Roland de Roncesvalles' companions were buried there. A priory was installed there which was reformed in 1497. He controlled a large part of the Middle Leyre and its catchment area as far as Hostens. Texts dating from the end of the 15th century (royalties) give us information about their homes and what they cultivated.
The 11th century church, originally with its defensive tower, dates from the late 15th century and reflects the defensive concerns raised by the 100-year war.
