Within Gironde and at the gates to Périgord (25km west of Bergerac), Sainte Foy La Grande is a bastide of French origin, created in 1255 by Alphonse de Poitiers, the brother of Saint Louis. It extends along the banks of the Dordogne, a strategic position which, for a long time, made it a coveted stronghold.
With a checkerboard layout, Sainte Foy la Grande has remarkable architectural heritage: Central square with arches and half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, several of which are listed on the Inventory of Historic Monuments. On Saturday mornings it holds a market listed among the 100 prettiest in France.
