Description

In Arthez, the church of Saint John the Baptist is located at a crossroads. Built in the 13th century, it was equipped in the 15th century with a brick defence tower pierced with loopholes. In the 19th century it was covered with vaults, completed by a semicircular apse and a wide porch above which the town hall was built.
In spite of its transformations, it has preserved some remarkable old features: 14th and 16th century mural paintings, a trace of a funerary litre, an 18th century carved wooden entrance door showing Saint Jean Baptiste, and a beautifully painted coat of arms in the western gallery. The marble high altar decorated with applied gilded wood motifs made in the 19th century has also been inscribed.
The Domaine d'Ognoas hiking trail runs alongside the church and links vineyards, forests and crops, passing by the Gaube pond and its old mill.
