La Sauveté

PyramidePratDuCuré230505
La Sauveté

Description

The church of the former Benedictine Priory of St. Mary formed the heart of a space called "sauveté". This "sauveté" was closely linked to the notion of the right of asylum. The lords of the day also granted rights and privileges to these salvaged persons, for example the right of wreckage: "whoever found a barrel could drink from it to satiation - whoever found a piece of cloth could carve a habit from it". The salvage area was delimited by boundary stones or pyramids
Of the 9 "pyramids" that existed in the 19th century, there are currently more than 5, but their foundations, which were buried in sand (up to 2m) over the past centuries, were thus protected from total destruction. They have been classified as Historic Monument since 1941.
The circuit of the pyramids is available at the museum of Mimizan
